Philadelphia Zoo Address

The Philadelphia Zoo was the first zoo in the United States. While the zoo was originally chartered in 1859 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the American Civil War delayed its opening until 1874. When the zoo first opened, admission only cost 25 cents and there were 1,000 animals on display.

The Philadelphia Zoo is known for breeding animals that are otherwise hard to breed in captivity. Today, the zoo consists of over 1,300 animals spread across 42 acres. Many of the animals kept at the zoo are either endangered or very rare. In addition to the animals, there is a children's zoo, a lake for paddle boats, a balloon ride and many other exhibits.

There are a number of specific animal houses and exhibits for people to see at the Philadelphia Zoo. The Reptile and Amphibian House is home to more than 125 species such at giant tortoises and a number of dangerous snakes. There is also a Small Mammal House that features a number of small and furry animals like meerkats and bats. Birds and exotic animals are also found throughout the zoo in various exhibits.

Since the Philadelphia Zoo is known for breeding rare animals, there is always something new to see.

Open: All year long, but hours vary by season. Closed on major holidays.
