Elfreth's Alley Address
If you didn't think it was possible for an alley to be a National Historic Landmark, then you obviously don't know about Elfreth's Alley in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This alley is one of the oldest residential streets in the United States and has been inhabited for over 200 years. The alley is located in the Old City Neighborhood between Arch and Race Streets off of Second Street. The alley is named after an 18th-century blacksmith named Jeremiah Elfreth. Various tradespeople lived in the alley during the 1770s. By the end of the 19th century, the street started to change. Factories began setting up around the street which brought in a lot of immigrants looking for work. The Elfreth's Alley Association was founded in 1934 in order to preserve the historical heritage of the street. The organization was also able to prevent the street from being demolished. The alley is now a tourist attraction, because it still has many surviving examples of 18th century housing. The association holds a number of holiday celebrations throughout the year to raise money for restoration and upkeep of the historic buildings.
