National Christmas Tree Lighting
Every December a "Pageant of Peace" is held on the Ellipse starting with the National Christmas Tree lighting on December 1. The tree is decorated and lighted every night until 11 PM through the end of December. More than 20,000 people crowded the East Plaza of the U.S. Capitol Building for the first National Christmas Tree Lighting in 1913. In 1923 the National Christmas Tree Lighting was moved to its current location on the Ellipse. For over 50 years a new tree was cut and hauled to the Ellipse where it was decorated and lighted. In 1978 a live 40-foot Colorado blue spruce was transplanted from York, Pennsylvania to the Ellipse. This tree is decorated each December. Open: Every day
