National Christmas Tree Lighting

National Christmas Tree Lighting

Every December a "Pageant of Peace" is held on Ellipse starting with the National Christmas Tree lighting on December 1. It's decorated and lighted every night until 11 PM through end of December.

More than 20,000 people crowded East Plaza of U.S. Capitol Building for the first National Christmas Tree Lighting in 1913.

In 1923 National Christmas Tree Lighting was moved to its current location on Ellipse. For over 50 years a new tree has been cut and hauled to the Ellipse where it is decorated and lighted.
