Lincoln Memorial at Night
Anchoring the Mall on its western end is the Lincoln Memorial, honoring Abraham Lincoln, the nation's 16th president. Its striking architecture, reminiscent of Greek temples, has inspired visitors since 1922. The interior of the memorial is dominated by a massive, brooding statue of Lincoln that has evoked reverence in visitors of all ages. The Lincoln Memorial was built to resemble a Greek temple. It has 36 Doric columns, one for each state at the time of Lincoln’s death. The statue of Lincoln was sculpted by Daniel Chester French. |
