BART - San Francisco's mass transit system. A modern system with both above and underground tracks and stations. Cost to downtown San Francisco - $5

Caltrain - Train service from San Francisco southwards to San Jose and beyond. From the airport take BART to Caltrain station at Millbrae. Cost to San Jose - $7.50

SamTrans Public Bus - Provides local bus service to San Mateo County and parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto from all terminals at the airport - $1.50 for local and $4 for express service. If you have time and patience, try the bus. However, the bus system is complex and normally used by experienced local bus riders.
